Used like that the MDF is known as a spoilboard. Vac hold downs can be extremely useful if you set them up correctly.

Some good resources for vacuum hold down techniques can be found here:http://www.plasticsmag.com/..., and on page 67 of this PDF: http://www.onsrud.com/files...

I hope the info helps!

Re: Milling process – LED test

Hey Sam, nice work...
I have a question, is that a vacuum table and if so is it sucking through the mdf base? I built my own 3m x 1.5m router (see chrismartin.org) and I reckon a vac hold down would work for me... BTW, I recently did a table very like yours. You can see an mdf anglepoise lamp I built on the site...etc. Chris

Re: Matchstick Light

Congratulations!! this project is an example not only of pure efficiency (more with less), but also of a new access to production.

Re: Matchstick Light

The original nuts we used were uncomfortable to tighten, and it was very hard to get tight enough to hold everything without the light sagging. The wing nuts were also less than 1/5th the cost of the thumb nuts.

In the end I think the wing nuts are more fitted to the utilitarian aesthetic.

Re: Matchstick Light

Very nice! Furnishing an apartment and then moving is a huge pain, especially when two people can hardly lift your cheap-as-free desk. I absolutely love that yours breaks down into pieces! It looks like something I could carry down stairs by myself and fit in my car. My Sam and I started a pizza peel project yesterday. Red alder and cherry. We could use your CNC process, but analog machining will have to suffice. I like the thinness you achieved, the placement of the legs which let the bowl appear to float above the table, and the minimal curve.

Things are both in them and on them. Kind of bowl, kind of plate...Their shape looks a bit like the biomorphic forms of some mid-century modern design, but lighter and cleaner and its own thing.

(Can you tell I love my bowl, edition 2/4?) The newer ones look much more ordinarily bowlish.

Re: More Bowls, More Process

The song is Captains of Industry by The Quit.

Re: Oh, Corrugate

Waiting for the next batch of bowls, I should have bought one when Maggie sent me the link!
Tracy

Re: More Bowls, More Process

Sam,
Great video, great bowls!
